Synopsis

Zoey enters the House of Night, a school where she will train to become an adult vampyre, if she makes it through the Change.

Comments

This book has received multiple awards for being good for reluctant readers, but be aware the content is VERY mature. I’d be hard-pressed to recommend the books from a content perspective, and definitely not for younger teens. In addition to language and sexual explicitness, there are multiple occult references.

Language

Level 1, 2 & 3 (as well as vulgar slang) [?]

Sexual Content

References to oral sex, lots of obscene language and provocative behavior.

Alcohol/Drugs

Teens drink and smoke cigarettes and marijuana. They drug an adult to knock them out.

Violence/Disturbing

Well, it’s a vampire novel, so it’s dark. There is a fairly graphic description of a teen dying and visits by ghosts.

Social/Family

Teen sneaks out of the house with a hidden key. Multiple gay/lesbian references with crude slang, a teens tells of her father raping her for years.

Religion/Spiritual

Mainstream religion is bashed pretty hard. References to paganism abound, including rituals and blood drinking.
