Little Willy hopes to pay the back taxes on his grandfather’s farm with the purse from a dogsled race he enters.

A nice story of struggle, working hard, and kindness. The main character is a strong, resourceful boy.  A good book for boys.

Willy hears a story about his opponent in the race when he hurt another man. Grownup hits Willy in the face. Willy’s dog’s heart bursts. She dies instantly. “Anyone crosses the line-I shoot.”

Grandfather very sad, has given up on life.  Willy’s parents are gone. Willy loves animals too much to ‘be a hunter’. Willy refers to his grownup opponent as a ‘big Indian’.
