Comments
Historical and geographical references, ‘National Treasure’ for kids. The family members are pretty hostile to each other. Grownups and authority figures are not portrayed particularly well. Kids will like the adventure in the book.

Violence/Disturbing
Parents are dead, a grandmother dies. Word usage: ’seppuku’, which (in case your kid looks it up) is a Japanese ritual of suicide by disembowelment. An explosion looks like it kills people. Kids get into fight with thugs, and are chased by relatives who mean them harm. They visit the catacombs (and it’s 7 million dead bodies) which are a bit creepy-skeletons, bones. Reference to a child’s coffin.
Social/Family
Siblings are pretty mean to each other. A girl who stutters is made fun of by her cousin. Character with eye twitch called ‘Spaz’. Amy ‘hated herself’ for noticing that a boy was cute. Aunt threatens to abandon children and leave them with Social Services. Kids lie to authorities. When your kid asks about it, yes, Ben Franklin did indeed write an essay on farts. Google it. :)
Religion/Spiritual
Reference to Aztec culture and ritual sacrifice, use of prayer candles.
